An Unfinished Song

สวัสดีวันใกล้ปีใหม่ครับ
    อัพบล็อกคราวนี้ มีอะไรแปลกๆ มาให้ลองอ่านดูบ้าง เมื่อสักเดือนสองเดือนก่อน น้องชายผมที่กำลังเรียนปริญญาเอกอยู่ที่อเมริกาส่งบทความมาให้ผมชิ้นหนึ่งครับ เป็นบทความที่เขาแปลจากบทความของผมอีกที เข้าใจว่าอยู่โน่นคงจะมีเวลาว่าง เลยแปลบทความของพี่ชายเป็นการฝึกภาษาเล่นๆ
    ผมได้อ่านที่เขาแปลจากภาษาไทยเป็นภาษาอังกฤษแล้วก็รู้สึกดีๆ แปลกๆ นะครับ คือเวลาพูดเรื่องเดียวกันแต่พูดด้วยอีกภาษาหนึ่งนี่มันมีอะไรบางอย่างที่แตกต่างออกไปอยู่เหมือนกัน
    บทความนี้แปลจากบทความที่ชื่อ เพลงที่ยังไม่จบ ซึ่งเคยตีพิมพ์ในนิตยสาร Image ก่อนที่ภายหลังจะถูกนำมารวมในหนังสือ ตื่นจนเช้า ครับ บางคนอาจจะเคยอ่านที่เป็นภาษาไทยแล้ว คราวนี้ผมลงภาษาอังกฤษให้ดูล้วนๆ เลยดีกว่า ใครพออ่านได้ก็อ่านดูนะครับ
    น่าจะไ้ด้อรรถรสไปอีกแบบ

An Unfinished Song

    I had a chance to spend a good amount of time talking with my pal; backdrop of our conversation was a low volume contemporary Thai pop music.
    Song after song, we seemed to run out of topics of conversation. Silence seeped in.
    That was when my friend went, “don’t you think that there’re only two kinds of music, the faded-ending and the abruptly ended ones?”
    Then my thought went, isn’t it funny that while people are trying to classify music into pop, rocks, blue, disco, electronic, or country, if we were to categorize music by its ending, they are only two kinds? One of that is a fade-out ending; typical and seamless. Sometimes we don’t even notice that the song has already ended.
    The other one, seemingly ended kind, appears to require more composition skills—drum beats and chorus may come into play to better the instrumental ending.
    Yet another kind is the abruptly ended song, one might not expected the song to end that easily.
    More contemporary Thai pop songs were filled in the air. We went on to talk about another meaning of ending in lyric of the fashionable music. We concurred that most of them talked about ending of relationships, breaking up or being broken up alike.
    Some are about parting the lover, or friends, friend-turn-lover, lover-turn-friend, or even lover turn acquaintance.
    Some are slowly ended relationship; some are fast and heart breaking.
    Then my thought went, ending of relationship is somewhat similar to ending of song… eventually they have to reach the conclusion… no matter how beautiful or hopeful they are.
    Once again silence seeped in, song after song, relationship after relationship. I started to think about my past relationships with others. Some ended without warning, some beautifully ended. Many times relationships with friends simply faded out.
    Then I recalled some songs have a strange ending, some keep the volume up and down before ending, some fade but go on and on, some end and after a few seconds, it suddenly comes back with a loud drumbeat and continues to play.
    These kinds of ending happened in life, too.
    Sometimes I hoped the ended relationship might only be a fade-out of the song before it comes back, probably not in a few seconds, but a few days, or a few months, or a few years. I still hope the song will come back…
    Between two persons, sometimes the relationship ends because the time has come, sometimes because the pace of life has changed.
    As much as we like to hum our favorite songs every now and then, good old memories bring joy and laughter when we think back to.

    “Have you seen — lately?” my friend asked
    I told him I still see him occasionally.
    …vocals faded to instrumental
    He continued to ask me about our old friends.
    At that moment, I realized the only different between an ending of a song and a relationship.
    While a song may last a few minutes, a relationship may last a lifetime.
